Job Description

Per Diem
As needed between 7:30am - 7:00pm


Under the supervision of the Lab Manager, performs clinical laboratory procedures, quality assurance, and instrument maintenance.

The Medical Technologist also maintains cooperative working relationships with intradepartmental and interdepartmental personnel.


  • Perform routine and special laboratory tests within a designated area
  • Recognize test inconsistencies and take appropriate corrective action. Provide assistance to laboratory co-workers in resolution of similar problems. Seek help from the Lab Supervisor
  • Call critical test results to physicians or nurses immediately and according to established criteria
  • Maintain the abnormal results log according to protocol
  • Prepare test reports legibly. Initial and date own work performed. Review reports for clerical accuracy and clinical indications
  • Perform quality-control tests within a designated area
  • Run quality control tests according to procedure and maintains appropriate data recording
  • Analyze quality-control data and take appropriate corrective action when results are outside acceptable limits. Provide assistance to laboratory co-workers in resolution of similar problems. Seek help from the Lab Supervisor as required. Documents actions taken
  • Hold patient results until out-of-control situations are resolved. Report unresolved situations to the Lab Supervisor
  • Perform preventive maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Observe and follow department preventive maintenance schedules
  • Document all instrument checks, preventive maintenance, routines, problems, and corrective actions taken
  • Recognize, analyze, and take corrective action to resolve instrument/clinical problems. Provide assistance to laboratory co-workers in the resolution of similar problems. Seek help from the Lab Supervisor as required
  • Report unresolved instrument/clinical problems to the Lab Supervisor
  • Provide in-service training to other laboratory personnel and students within a designated area
  • Provide instruction in laboratory bench procedures, instrument/clinical troubleshooting techniques, and clinical application of test results
  • Assure assimilation of procedures and evaluate troubleshooting techniques. Document it by initialing department checklist
  • Assist the Lab Supervisor in establishing educational programs that will meet the needs of employees or students
  • Conduct in-service classes for other laboratory personnel under the guidance of the Lab Supervisor
  • Perform clerical functions associated with the designated laboratory area
  • Maintain tally records of work performed for workload and statistical reporting purposes. May be assigned responsibility for monthly collation of tallies
  • Help maintain files pertinent to the laboratory area
  • Contribute to the general laboratory functions and institutional needs
  • Perform specimen collection and processing duties as needed or assigned and according to policies established in the Phlebotomy area
  • Attend regular department staff meetings and in-service training
  • Attend and participate in the preparation and/or presentation of the laboratory continuing education programs
  • Observe laboratory and Clinic policies, procedures, and safety practices
  • Keep work area neat and clean, and re-stock daily supplies
  • Assume the role of Lab Supervisor in the routine daily activities of the section as assigned
  • Maintain equilibrium in stressful situations
  • Follow all OSHA and Universal Precautions guidelines


  • Participate in in-service/education regarding Quality Improvement
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned or requested
  • May be assigned responsibilities for coordinating educational activities
  • Assist the Lab Supervisor in inventory control and requisition of supplies
  • Assists the Lab Supervisor in quality-assurance activities


  • Ability to organize and coordinate diverse activities
  • Familiarity with state and federal regulations where applicable


  • Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology or related Science field
  • Successful completion of a Medical Technology program that is accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA), or equivalent training, education, and experience
  • MT (ASCP) certification or equivalent nationally recognized Medical Technology certification
